Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate on human resource management and teachers' attitude to work in senior secondary schools in Calabar south Local Government Area of Cross River State. In order to get to a conclusive end, four hypotheses were stated to direct the study, some of which includes; there is no significant influence of staff development on teachers' attitude to work, there is no significant influence of performance appraisal on teachers' attitude to work, etc. The literature was reviewed theoretically and empirically according to the variables and hypotheses for the study to aide discussion of findings. Ex-post facto research design was adopted for the study. A total population of 450 teachers was used and a sample of 353 teacher respondents was used for the study using Simple random sampling technique. A 40-item questionnaire was the main instrument for data collection and was administered and retrieved personally by the researcher and Cronbach Alpha reliability test was used to test the reliability of the research instrument. Independent t-test analysis was deemed fit to test the hypotheses at .05 level of significance for each of the hypotheses of the study. The result of the findings indicated that staff development, job satisfaction and management-staff relations significantly influence teachers' attitude to work, while it was also discovered that performance appraisal does not significantly influence teachers' attitude to work. As regards to the findings it was recommended that Training and development of staff should be adhered to by the government, school administrators and even the teachers themselves should strive to develop their skills in order to build up capacity for increased positive attitude to work and provide room for advancement and promotion, the assessing or evaluation of staff should be done and not limited to evaluation or assessing alone but those that have been assessed and found effective should be motivated be it by financial benefit, promotion, modeling and recommendation within and outside the institution, etc. and it was recommended that human resource management and teachers' attitude to work in Calabar education zone, human resource management and secondary school teachers' effectiveness in Calabar Metropolis, Nigeria etc. should be studied further.
